Red Rock Canyon
Nevada (2/25/00)

Our first Las Vegas
area day trip was to the Red Rock Canyon. During the first part of the
drive through the canyon, we saw a large red rock projecting out of the
mountains. We stopped to watch the rock climbers and took a short hike out
onto a rock pinnacle. The picture above shows the children on top. (When
Karen took the picture she kept saying, "Stay still, don't move, hold
on to the younger children." since there was a drop off around 3/4 of
the rock.)
We continued around the
driving trail to see other rock climbers and the southwest beauty
displayed in the countryside. Many cacti, desert bushes and Joshua trees
speckled the land. The desert landscape promptly ended with high, steep
sided mountains which shot up out of the ground.
The "Children's
Discovery Trail" was a great one mile hike. We walked through dried
up river beds and saw Indian pictographs.
