Judd's Trail (5/21/00)

Judd's Trail
is on the southern side of the Koa Mountain range. The beautiful bamboo
forest towering about 40 feet above us was an impressive site. The first
thing that comes to our mind is, "I didn't realize bamboo grows so
tall!"
The trail not
only goes through a bamboo forest but a Norfolk pine forest. These trees
were brought to the island by Captain Cooke who started to grow them for
sailing ship's mast. Little did he realize that technology was going to
advance quicker than his trees would grow. Today, we are able to enjoy
them since the steam engine replaced the sails.
After going
through the pine forest the trail goes along a stream that has beautiful
little waterfalls and roots of Banyan trees giving it a tropical jungle
look. The children kept saying, "I wonder if there are any lions or
monkeys or maybe even elephants." Although it is not that kind of
jungle, listening to a large variety of birds singing was beautiful and
unique for us to hear.
