Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty

On Thursday,
the family and Grandpa Ron had a grand time visiting the historic Ellis
Island and Statue of Liberty. We enjoyed seeing where some of our
family ancestors entered the United States. Their ambitions to find a new life held
a higher value than their worldly possessions. Two sets of
great-great-grandparents who met and married on Ellis Island remained
happily married all their years.
Embarking on
the ferry at the Statue of Liberty State Park, we were taken to Ellis
Island. Along the way we had a wonderful view of the modern Manhattan
contrasting with the old architectural structure of the main buildings on Ellis
Island. The museum contained many samples of the turn of the century
immigrant lifestyle. Clothing, dishware, dress accessories,
journals, portraits and Bibles were the most popular possessions with
all the immigrant ethnic groups.
The younger
children were very happy to have another ferry boat ride to the Statue of
Liberty. This seemed to be the
highlight of the trip for them. Landing at the Statue of Liberty, we
immediately headed for Lady Liberty and began our ascent to the crown. After 354 steps we all arrived at
the top to see the magnificent view of New York Harbor. All of us were
thrilled to have made the trek. It was well worth every step! The museum
highlights explained the statue's history and construction. The skills
necessary to create this magnificent piece of art were admired by all of
us.
We took many
pictures which we hope you will enjoy on our Photo Album pages.
