Painted Desert and Petrified Forest
Arizona (2/21/00)

The Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest look very different even though they are within the same National Park.

The Painted Desert artistically designed our Creator displays the beauty in hills "painted" by the erosion process. The picture to the left shows the white gypsum white tops with the chinle red bottoms. At one time this whole area was under water.

The family in front of a tree turned to rock. This is the root of one of the largest trees in the Petrified Forrest. These mammoths turned to rock as they were covered by layers of silica rich soil before they had the opportunity to decompose. Now after years of erosion, these petrified trees had become uncovered for us to see the beauty of the rainbows of agates, jaspers, and other silica rich semi-precious gems.
