Rural Life Museum
Baton Rouge, Louisiana (2/15/00)

The
educational portion of our trip through Louisiana did not originally
include this museum, but we were glad that we visited this place. We had
planned to leave Pensacola earlier the day before and eat a late lunch at
Papa Joe's in the French Quarter of New Orleans. When we arrived at Bourbon Street, the sun had
already set and the night crowd had started to arrive. We opted to eat at
Baton Rouge, but the experience of hearing, seeing and smelling New
Orleans at night will probably last with most of the children. During our
one hour stroll, we saw hundreds of interesting people and only ten children. Six of them were ours.
The Rural Life
Museum and Windrush gardens is located on the 450 acre Burden Research
Plantation of the Louisiana State University. The museum provides insight
into the largely forgotten lifestyles and cultures of pre-industrial
Louisiana. Home to extensive collections of tools, household utensils,
furniture, vehicles, and farming implements, the museum preserves an
important part of the rural heritage of Louisiana and the nation.
As we left the
museum and headed west for Texas, we enjoyed the warm weather and scenery
as we traveled the elevated highway through the swampland to Henderson, LA.
We headed northward toward Shreveport aiming for north Texas where we plan
to visit Aunt Mary Whitford and cousins.
We took many
pictures which we hope you will enjoy on our Photo Album pages.
