Grandma and Grandpa Gregg
Yreka, California (3/2 - 3/5/00)

For the first
time on the trip, Kent and the family drove through the night from North Las
Vegas, Nevada to Yreka, California. We wanted to get to Karen's Mom's
and Gregg's place without the delay. Naps through the night were sufficient. It may
sound a bit silly to do such a thing, but the snow storms were coming
through the night and there was one high mountain pass which we had to
cross. Although we did drive through some snow (These pictures will be
posted under our Death Valley Day.) the storm had begun in the region.
Even though
Karen's parents now live in the town of Yreka, the family stayed at the big house on the
farm. This allowed a bit more room for all. Grandma Gregg filled the
pantry to enable us to have breakfast and lunch before going into town for
the rest of the day.
On our first
outing Grandma took us to the Siskiyou County Museum. The displays helped
the children understand the history of Northern California. There are many
Native American tribes who once occupied and are still settled in the
county. The gold rush attracted many settlers. To understand just how fertile
the land was with gold, we then went to the courthouse (The photo above is
in front of the courthouse.) were there is one of the largest displays of
gold in the country.
We took a nice
walk through town passing by the historic buildings and saw Grandma's
church. (More pictures of our walk can be seen on the Photo Album pages.)
The evenings
were spent in town at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Grandma made us many
delicious dinners. A movie was the evening entertainment for the children
while Karen and Kent had a chance to visit.
